Examinations and x-rays

Routine examinations are an effective way of monitoring the teeth and gums and are used to help prevent the need for treatment. If however treatment is required the examination is used to diagnose the problem and develop a treatment plan. X-rays are also carried out when required in order to help monitoring oral health as well as diagnose problems.

Fillings

A filling replaces part of a tooth that has been lost or removed because of dental decay. Most people are familiar with traditional metal fillings called amalgam, however, white fillings are much more natural looking and virtually invisible. Many people prefer white fillings rather than metal ones, and some people choose to replace existing fillings with white alternatives.

Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is needed when the blood or nerve supply to the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury, which may spread and eventually lead to an abscess. The aim of this treatment is to remove all infection, after which the root is cleaned and filled to prevent further infection. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.

Extractions

We offer the skilled services of an expert dentist whose practice is limited to oral surgery including the removal of wisdom teeth.

Crowns

When a tooth is very broken down it is necessary to provide a crown in order to restore it to its natural look and strength. This involves shaping the tooth, taking an impression, and asking a skilled technician to hand craft a customised crown, which is subsequently fitted in place with a special adhesive. Crowns are made from many different materials, for example, metal, porcelain or porcelain bonded to metal.

Bridges

A bridge fixes an artificial tooth (or teeth) to natural teeth on one or both sides of a gap. Some bridges have crowns at each end that fit over the natural teeth; others are fixed to the surface of the teeth next to the gap. Each bridge is carefully hand crafted by a skilled technician to emulate the natural teeth as closely as possible. A bridge may take the place of one or more missing teeth and the results can be excellent with good functional and aesthetic results. With careful maintenance a well-made bridge can last many years. However the bone in the jaw surrounding the missing tooth or teeth can continue to recede.

Dentures

Dentures have been used to replace teeth since the days of the building of the Pyramids. Well-made dentures will make you look good, allow you to eat almost all foods without embarrassment, and will restore the facial contour around the mouth. It is worth considering dental implants alongside dentures. Very often any movement of a denture can be prevented by simple placement of a couple of implants to “lock” the denture into position. Dentures last for many years, but they and the mouth should be checked regularly. Dentures will need to be replaced after about five years. Dentures remain a cost effective method of replacing missing teeth by providing the patient with a removable appliance. Dentures can provide patients with a reliable biting and chewing function and acceptable appearance. The main disadvantages with the dentures are they are sometimes difficult to tolerate and are subject to slippage during speech and normal movement of the mouth. The bone in the jaw surrounding the missing tooth or teeth continues to recede, and this can lead to a gradual collapse of the lower profile of the face.
